THE VALLEYS OF TICINO

The reality of the valleys of Ticino as a field of deep connections and gentle tensions.
The solid connections between the public spaces of remote territories and their inhabitants. The benign tensions in the question of appropriation and relation of the inhabitants of the valleys and their closest public spaces.

The reality of the valleys of Ticino as a field of strong roots and ephemeral traces.
The robust roots of tradition  and sense of belonging that survives all generations. The ephemeral traces of History and stories that are left behind in public spaces, as fragile testimonies of a past time.

The reality of the valleys of Ticino as a field of firm communities and subliminal solitude.
The tight relationships of intergenerational communities that endure all times. The hidden solitude of the elderly inhabitants of all territories, that crave encounters in an increasingly frenetic present.

The reality of the valleys of Ticino as a field that wants to be investigated.

Investigation

In a first step students will discover the identities of the five villages through drawings. All villages very much the same, and yet very different. They will observe closely their public spaces, their way of gathering, their way of interacting, of encountering. Observing moments which reveal the nature of the lived space.

Intuition

Students will then uncover evidences for possible interventions. They will take the small hints of undiscovered potential and imagine a way to translate them into new encounters. They will envision fragments of imagination that create moments of subversion, of interaction, of togetherness.

Intervention

In the final days of the summer school, students will implement the fragments of imagination into the built reality. They will collaborate with local craftsmen and craftswomen in order to build a fragment of everyday life. Building an encounter of material for the encounters of a community.

PUBLICATION

The process of the approach, the drawings, the moments, the ideas are recorded throughout the summer school. At the end of the summer school, the interventions created by the students as well as the developmental steps leading to the outcome will be collected and merged into a publication.

REVEALING ENCOUNTERS

The Valle di Muggio will be taken as a case study in order to reflect on the relation between the public space and the social life of the community living in it. We will investigate on the potential of architecture to encourage relations between people, as a reaction to the phenomena of solitude which is more and more taking over the peripheral regions of Ticino, of Switzerland, of Europe.

Guests will be invited to give different perspectives on themes of living together in these specific territories. Groups of three students will engage each with one specific village of the Valle di Muggio. They will consider the realities of elderly people and the community as a whole that live in these peripheral regions. Students will investigate, will observe, will listen and will understand how the community relates to the public space surrounding them. They will observe the encounters taking place in these spaces. Encounters of times, encounters of materials, encounters of spaces, encounters of people. And they will envision the encounters that are being longed for, the encounters that are missed, the encounters that can be imagined. They will be re-drawing the encounters, leaving behind fragments of built imagination.
